The spiral itself is a symbol of growth and developement; usually a clock-wise spiral indicates expansion, the movement of the sun in the sky. The counter-clock spiral like the one in this design is instead often used to indicate water, the inner voyage.

Aztecs held the spiral as the number zero, the beginning.
